Abakan (Russian: Абакан) is a city in Russia, located in Republic of Khakassia at the mouth of the Abakan River, flowing into the Yenisei, 3390 km east of Moscow and 400 km south of Krasnoyarsk. It is the capital of the region.

Hitchhiking in

If you are coming from Krasnoyarsk, ask your driver to drop you at the bridge over the Abakan River. It is just a 10-minute drive on the bypass along the Yenisei. If coming from Minusinsk, ask to be let off at the roundabout by the airport, or switch to any local transport heading towards the airport. Hitchhiking by yourself along the bypass is ineffective, as it mostly serves local traffic.

Points of arrival:

Hitchhiking out

North towards Krasnoyarsk via R257 "Yenisei"

  • Take any transport towards Chernogorsk or the Airport. There are several roundabouts with wide shoulders along the Krasnoyarsk highway.
  • Bus #132A from the main bus station goes all the way to the distant settlement of Prigorsk, far beyond Chernogorsk.

East towards Minusinsk and further south to Kyzyl via R257 "Yenisei"

By commuter train: If you are staying in the center of Abakan and want to quickly reach the highway to Kyzyl without going through Minusinsk, take the morning daily commuter train to Tagarsky stop. From there it is only 1.3 km on a dirt road to the highway, easily walked. Hitchhiking through Minusinsk is slower.

By bus: A good spot is the large roundabout in front of the bridge over the Yenisei near the village Podsinee.

  • Reachable by city bus #116, get off at "Arhipenko-1" stop.
  • On the opposite side of the roundabout and across the railway line is an area with a stop "Vostochnaya (d/o Podsinee)" served by buses #54, 56, 59.

Go to the roundabout and hitch south; closer to Minusinsk there are no more major turns. Eight kilometers past the bridge is another roundabout. Kyzyl and Ergaki are to the right, along Koltsevaya street. Another eight kilometers further is a third roundabout with a sign "Kyzyl" to the right. From the end of Minusinsk it's a 1 km walk to a 24-hour gas station "Start".

Southwest towards Ak-Dovurak via A161

From the railway station area, take bus #58 to its terminal stop "Dachi Sapogovo".
