Belomorsk (Russian: Беломо́рск, Karelian: Šuomua, Finnish: Belomorsk) is a city in the northwest of Russia, in the Republic of Karelia. It is the administrative center of Belomorsky District and Belomorsk urban settlement. The population is just over 10,000 people.

Hitchhiking in

Belomorsk is located 36 km from the E105/R21 "Kola" highway (Saint PetersburgMurmanskNorway) and is connected to it by the R18 (Pushnoy — Belomorsk) road.

There is a train station and bus station (Zheleznodorozhnaya Street, Phone +7 (81437) 5-50-35).

Hitchhiking out

West towards R21 Kola Highway via R18

  • Walk along Oktyabrskaya Street to the edge of the city. You can go a bit further to the railway crossing. Hitchhike directly to the highway. For the Belomorsk Petroglyphs, head this way as well. You can use bus routes 1 or 3 to get out of the city.

North towards the White Sea

  • Follow Portovoye Shosse towards the port. You can go by car or on foot—the whole road is about 14 km. After that, it turns into a footpath.

Southeast towards Sumsky Posad

  • From the center, take Leninskaya Street, then turn onto the rough Arkhangelskaya Street (do not use the opposite bank via Shizhenskoe Shosse—there is no bridge as sometimes shown on maps, you would have to swim). Continue to the last lock of the Belomorsk Canal, which is also a local curiosity. After the lock, turn right and you can either drive or walk on the dirt road and try hitchhiking—sometimes you'll get picked up before the fork near Vodnikov settlement, where the actual road is.
  • To avoid walking for long, take bus 6 to Vodnikov settlement.
  • The road from Vodnikov to Virma is of mediocre asphalt quality, after which it becomes a dirt road. Interesting places here are the semi-ruined old church in Virma and the very old village of Sumsky Posad. Traffic is light but drivers are usually willing to pick up hitchhikers. You can go past Sumsky Posad, but traffic is even sparser there.

Towards the Solovetsky Islands

  • See the description for the route to Sumsky Posad—the passenger port is located in Vodnikov settlement.

Places to avoid

Accommodation and Sleep

  • Wild camping is possible on the shore of the White Sea, as well as near the Belomorsk Petroglyphs.
