Hitchhiking out
North towards Van, Ankara
Option 1 - Keklikpınarı / Depin
To go towards Yüksekova, Şemdinli, Esendere, Başkale, Van, or Ankara, you need to get on the Van Road. You can reach Keklikpınarı, which is where the city ends, either by local minibus or on foot. From there, walk about 3 km down to Depin, and start hitchhiking from Depin onwards.
At the 30th kilometer of Van Road (Bağışlı area), the road splits towards Yüksekova, Şemdinli, and Esendere. Traffic is lighter up to this Yüksekova junction, but from that point onwards, traffic increases due to better geographic conditions and more vehicles coming from the Esendere-Yüksekova direction.
South towards Şırnak, Ankara
Option 1 - Keklikpınarı / Depin
To go towards Çukurca, Beytüşşebap, Şırnak, Mardin, or Ankara, you need to get on the Şırnak Road. Similar to the Van direction, reach Keklikpınarı by local minibus or on foot, then walk about 3 km down to Depin to start hitchhiking.
The road to Çukurca splits off at the 30th kilometer of the Şırnak Road. For Ankara, the route through Şırnak is also noted as significantly shorter.
The Hakkari-Şırnak Road is one of Turkey's least-trafficked intercity roads. Sightings of cars are rare, and even rarer are vehicles with out-of-region license plates. Even during its busiest hours, you may only see a car every 5 minutes. At night, sometimes only a handful of cars pass the entire length of the road. After Uludere, the traffic increases somewhat, but between Hakkari and Uludere, the traffic is very sparse. The road traverses mountains and hills, making Hakkari and Şırnak highly disconnected; Hakkari handles most of its business with Van. The road is so empty that sometimes locals place beehives on its edge, sit on the roadside, children play ball or jump rope on the road, and flocks of sheep may block the way. Hitchhiking is theoretically possible, but someone leaving Hakkari at 7:00 AM may only reach Şırnak by 7:00 PM. This legendary road offers stunning scenery, but is a challenging route.
