Republic of Kalmykia (Russian: Республика Калмыкия) is one of the least populated federal subjects of Russia, and is part of the Southern Federal District.
The administrative center and the only true city is Elista.
Kalmykia borders the Republic of Dagestan to the south, Stavropol Krai to the southwest, Rostov Oblast to the west, Volgograd Oblast to the northwest, and Astrakhan Oblast to the east.

Hitchhiking out and travel specifics
- Hitchhiking in the republic is more difficult than in neighboring regions. This is simply because of the smaller population and fewer cars. However, you have a higher chance of catching a ride directly to the center of the republic.
- Some hitchhikers have reported that drunk locals showed aggression towards "outsiders," similar to alcohol-driven nationalism. Therefore, it is recommended to avoid walking around city outskirts and visiting villages during holidays and evenings on weekends.
- Border zone: the coast and islands of the Caspian Sea. For visiting the border zone, you must obtain a special permit in advance (for example, via the "Gosuslugi" portal).
